This is the final article in Pinnacle Design and Build’s 10-part remodel and ADU series. Before you dive into a renovation, make sure you’re truly prepared. Our Remodel Readiness Checklist helps homeowners plan with confidence—covering everything from permits to pets. Use it to spot red flags, avoid delays, and make sure your project runs smoothly from day one.
Project Planning
- I have clear goals for this remodel (function, resale, comfort, etc.)
- I know the type of remodel I want (kitchen, bath, ADU, addition, etc.)
- I’ve set a target budget—and included a contingency (10-15%)
- I’ve researched inspiration photos and ideas I like
Permits & Paperwork
- I’ve checked with my city or consulted a contractor about zoning limits
- I know whether I’ll need structural or engineering work
- I’ve reviewed financing options (cash, HELOC, refinance, etc.)
Design & Scope
- I have a basic layout or floor plan in mind
- I’ve chosen finishes I like (tile, counters, cabinets, paint, etc.)
- I understand the timeline and phases of the remodel
- I’ve decided whether I’ll stay or move out during construction
Site & Home Prep
- I’ve cleared out rooms/areas where work will happen
- I have a plan to protect furniture, flooring, or valuables
- I’ve communicated with neighbors about potential noise or trucks
Family & Lifestyle
- I’ve made arrangements for kids or pets during noisy work
- I’ve set expectations with my partner/family about the disruption
- I have a designated decision-maker for project updates and change orders
